The Namangan Flower Festival attracts thousands of visitors each year, but the spectacular, storied event remains little-known beyond the Ferghana Valley. This Uzbek man is preparing for the opening of one of Uzbekistanâs most charming yet least-known cultural events. The Namangan Flower Festival has been held in Uzbekistanâs Ferghana Valley every year since 1961 - except for 2020 due to the pandemic. The festival traditionally opens with a parade of cars covered in fresh flowers. The fragrant convoy drives into the center of Namangan, where the festivities kick off. Celebrated Uzbek photographer Anzor Bukharsky took these images of this yearâs festival, which began amid stormy weather on May 22 and runs through June 5. Bukharsky says he only heard about the obscure festival by chance shortly before it began. The photographer and a journalist friend, Timur Nimanov, âimmediatelyâ jumped into a car to make the five-hour journey there from Tashkent. A crowd gathered despite the rain to watch performances that marked the beginning of the Namangan Flower Festival. Bukharsky says the crowded, rain-soaked scene above highlighted a hunger for public celebrations, saying, âUzbeks are not indifferent to such events; they want spectacles.â As with most Uzbek public events, the festival is heavily policed. Bukharsky says that from what he could see, however, the officers at the festival were âvery discreet, thank God.â A display made entirely of fresh flowers. According to Uzbek media, Namangan has been known for its flower production since the 1700s. Uzbekistanâs Ferghana Valley is a lush, fertile region of the largely arid country. Two women get ready to take a selfie in front of a wall of fresh roses. Timur Nimanov, the journalist who traveled with Bukharsky, says last year's event was opened by an official who noted that while "many countries organize military parades in order to demonstrate their power, we hold flower festivals - symbols of peace, love, and peaceful development." Today, such a statement about military parades might be seen as politicized in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This year no comparisons were drawn to other countries' tastes in public events. For Bukharsky, the greatest surprise is how little is known about the Namangan Flower Festival, especially outside Uzbekistan. He said he hopes his photo documentation of the charming event can help raise its profile at a time when positive news is in short supply. "Flowers will save the world," he told RFE/RL.

Kicking off with âTyphoons,â from their latest album of the same name, Royal Blood added a danceable groove to an always ferocious rock assault, exploring inventive new sounds on album three. [+] Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen âI think weâre always evolving as people and as a band. I think to not do that is to sort of censor yourself or stunt your growth,â said vocalist and bassist Mike Kerr backstage prior to the set. âThatâs just part of being not only a musician but a human.â Kerrâs unique bass playing style conjures up images of a full band. A pulsating bassline drove the new âBoilermakerâ early in the Lollapalooza set. âLadies and gentlemen, Ben fâing Thatcher!â said Kerr on stage, pointing to his left as he introduced the drummer. âLast night we were at The Vic and it was rocking,â said Thatcher of Royal Bloodâs intimate Thursday night aftershow in front of just 1,400 fans. âIt was nice to be back in Chicago playing rock music to the people that want to listen to rock music again. It was terrible playing to no fans, Iâll tell you that,â he said, looking back on the last two years. âIf youâre going to any future festivals, make sure you hydrate and bring sun cream. Without those things, a festival can be a really bad experience.â Mike Kerr left and Ben Thatcher right of Royal Blood pose backstage at Lollapalooza. Friday, ... [+] July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen Indie pop trio MUNA had 45 minutes Friday on the Discord stage, a unique setting at Lollapalooza favored for the tree-lined shade it provides. Last month, the group released its self-titled third album via Phoebe Bridgersâ Saddest Factory Records, moving from a major to an indie label for the first time. âI guess it is a transition to go from a major label to an indie,â said singer Katie Gavin. âWeâre a pop band and we sound polished but thatâs just because Naomi and Josette are really good producers,â she said, complimenting her bandmates. âWe actually can function really well on an indie label because of how much stuff we do on our own. So itâs been really wonderful. Phoebe gives us a ton of creative power and freedom and really supports us. Weâve been lucky our entire career honestly to get to do what we want. Itâs just amazing - things have just worked out,â said Gavin. âWeâve had a lot of dark moments. And weâre not sure where things are gonna go - if weâll be able to keep doing this. But we just keep showing up and it has worked out in our favor.â MUNA poses backstage at Lollapalooza. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen In 2018, punk quartet The Regrettes performed during a Lolla pre show in the lobby of a downtown Chicago hotel. Four years later, theyâve moved up to a midday slot on the Titoâs stage at Grant Parkâs Petrillo Music Shell. âItâs magical. Itâs been really incredible to directly compare how much weâve grown in the past four years,â said singer and guitarist Lydia Night backstage following the groupâs set. âI feel so proud of all of us for who we are as people and individually and how we are as a group. And the show we put on, I feel very proud of it.â The Regrettes pose backstage at Lollapalooza. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen âTodayâs set was truly probably - no, it was definitely one of our greatest festival sets ever,â added guitarist Genessa Gariano. âI thought the crowd was so enthusiastic and so fun and I teared up for the first time in a very long time during a set. Just seeing people move together is such a special thing. And to see it move together to something weâre putting out is even more incredible,â she said. âIt made it so much easier to play well,â said drummer Drew Thomsen. âBecause you have so many eyes looking at you like, I love this!â And you can look back at them like, I also love this!â And itâs an infinite cycle.â Over the course of an hour Friday on the T-Mobile main stage, indie rockers Glass Animals performed on the south end of Grant Park, beginning their set with âLife Itselfâ from their 2016 album How to be a Human Being. Glass Animals perform on stage at Lollapalooza. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen âWhat a beautiful day! This is amazing!â said singer Dave Bayley. âYâall doinâ alright? What a view,â he continued, looking north across Grant Park at one of the most unique festival settings in America, the Chicago skyline looming in the background. On a stage which featured a basketball hoop, images of Pac-Man ran behind the band on a video screen as they developed the sunny, bouncy beat of âTangerine.â âI came here in 2006 when I was in high school and it was actually my first festival I ever went to. So this is a very full circle moment for me,â said electronic artist Maddy OâNeal, making her Lollapalooza debut as an artist during a 45 minute set on the Solana SOL X Perryâs stage. âDaft Punk had the pyramid stage. Pearl Jam was there. It was a good one - except for my car breaking down on the way there.â OâNeal, who will drop the single âChange of Paceâ next month ahead of the album Ricochet in September, moves deftly between live instrumentation like drum pads to electronic elements, telling a story while making each memorable set unique. Maddy O'Neal poses backstage at Lollapalooza. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen âI love to throw in good remixes - especially if Iâm playing for new people. You kind of have to draw them in a little bit,â explained OâNeal of her festival approach. âI play mostly my own music. So itâs a nice way to sprinkle things in if somebody has never seen me before. Itâs really fun to be able to break down my own songs. Thatâs why I use MIDI controllers and Ableton rather than DJing when I do that - because I can extract bits and pieces of my own songs and kind of do it on the fly or switch it up, do little vocal one shots here and there. Itâs just more interactive, you know?â For many electronic artists, the challenge heading into a festival lies in how to ensure the energy of an intimate, jampacked club banger translates to the massive outdoor stage. âIf Iâm playing a club, I kind of leave out the big energy tracks, the big room energy edits Iâve made,â explained Powell Aguirre one day before a Lolla performance in his guise as Surf Mesa. âIâm playing a lot of disco stuff at the aftershow versus the Lolla set, where itâs a performance itâs very animated and theatrical. Theatrical in the sense that itâs very impactful. Thereâs moments that are transitional with space for me to talk on the mic. In the club environment, thereâs kind of an ongoing beat and not a lot of space. At Lolla, thereâs push and pull.â Surf Mesa poses backstage at Lollapalooza. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen During the early pandemic quarantine of 2020, Surf Mesaâs âily i love you babyâ went viral on Tik Tok. The song has now been streamed nearly 800 million times on Spotify while the electronic artist has racked up over 3 billion streams worldwide, proving what a vital revenue stream Tik Tok has become - at least for now. âWhen you look at labels now, their whole guerilla marketing plan has shifted completely. Theyâre telling artists to tell their fans to pre-save through Tik Tok. Everything is leaking a song intentionally so that commenters can flood the section saying, Release this! Release this!â Itâs shifted everything,â he explained. âI think itâs hard for people to adapt and itâs hard for people to grasp that that might be the concept for now. Because thatâs all labels want right now - for people to get as many fans as they can on Tik Tok to pre-save their new track.â Dua Lipa performs on stage at Lollapalooza. Friday, July 29, 2022 at Grant Park in Chicago, IL Photo by Barry Brecheisen Friday night in Chicago, fans were torn, choosing between headlining sets by Machine Gun Kelly and Dua Lipa taking place simultaneously on the festivalâs two main stages. âLollapalooza! You ready to go to the moon?â asked Dua Lipa on stage Friday. âI said are you ready to go to the moon?!â Following a performance of âCold Heart,â her recent collaboration with Elton John, Dua Lipa and her band, flanked by a bevy of dancers, worked up âFuture Nostalgiaâ in front of the weekendâs biggest crowd so far, moving into âLevitatingâ as her set neared its final moments. We are Machine Gun Kelly and weâe been waiting for this moment for a long time!â said Kelly, a throbbing live bass line opening âgod save me.â Kelly danced from high atop an amp before making his way down from the stage, running out through the crowd to the soundboard, climbing the rigging to deliver âdrug dealerâ from atop the roof, relishing the spotlight from high above the Lolla throng.
